I'm Me!

THINKING ABOUT GENDER AND IDENTITY

Overall, this thematic book set deals with the topic of gender in a broad sense. It encourages students to think about gender stereotypes and discrimination in the workplace and society. The book set opens the conversation of awareness about gender identification in order to begin to understand and celebrate all identities. In the end, the set encourages the development of advocacy for self, allyship for others, and empathy for all.

Along with focusing on social-emotional standards (The CASEL 5), this thematic book set embeds English language arts standards that have students identifying, organizing, and sharing information, completing graphic organizers, utilizing images to gain a deeper meaning of the text, and using various strategies to define unknown words. Activities and discussion questions are suited for a 3rd through 6th-grade classroom audience and should be adjusted as appropriate for your grade level and students’ understanding.
