Read-U 2024 Educator Workshop: Tuesday June 4
Tuesday, June 4 8 am – 4 pm, Room 2151 in the Sorenson Arts and Education Complex Join READ-U for a free day-long event! This workshop brings together classroom teachers, school counselors, library media specialists, and other educators to learn about the University of Utah’s READ-U program and the standards-based READ-U units available for school use. The morning begins with learning about the use of picturebooks to help start challenging discussions in the classroom, create safe spaces for students’ mental and behavioral health, and develop students’ social-emotional capacities. In the afternoon we will explore two specific READ-U units: civic engagement, and anxiety. Participants will learn how the units incorporate carefully curated, high-quality diverse picturebooks and an adaptable and detailed plan for using the titles to (1) introduce the topic, (2) widen students’ perspectives surrounding it, and (3) engage them in meaningful discussions and activities that deepen understanding (and meet state standards in ELA and Social Studies!)
